"If necessary, use words"

"If we live according to our beliefs, people will notice. If the countenance of Jesus Christ shines in our lives,10 if we are joyful and at peace with the world, people will want to know why. One of the greatest sermons ever pronounced on missionary work is this simple thought attributed to Saint Francis of Assisi: 'Preach the gospel at all times and if necessary, use words'."
("Waiting on the Road to Damascus", President Dieter F. Uchtdorf)

I would like to alter Assisi's profound statement just a little but I think it still keeps the statement true to it's meaning:

"Love at all times, and if necessary, use words."

Jesus Christ showed love throughout his ministry.  He took time for the multitude and for the one.  He went out of his way to show love.  He sacrificed so much to show love. Yes, we all need to hear those words, "I love you."   They are precious words for the soul.  However, we can show people in our lives, or complete strangers, love by our actions: the kind words, the selfless gesture, the smile, the expression of gratitude, the act of service, and the simple acknowledgement of their existence.  Love is a magical thing!

  1. So many times, I have been prompted to simply hold to the rod in order to be a missionary. That alone can be a struggle at times, but I believe that is the true missionary work. Helping ourselves in order to help others provides us the ability and desire to serve.
