"And they were filled"

3 Nephi 18:4-5,9 "And when they had eaten and were filled, he commanded that they should give unto the multitude. And when the multitude had eaten and were filled....And it came to pass that they did so, and did drink of it and were filled; and they gave unto the multitude, and they did drink, and they were filled."

This verse was part of my scripture reading today.  Jesus Christ is giving the sacrament to the Nephites.  It made me think about all the times I take the sacrament.  The pieces of bread are bite size and the cups of water don't exactly quench one's thirst, so how do we become "filled"?  What are we being "filled" with?

Here are my thoughts about when I partake of the sacrament:

  • I have done my best that week to always remember Him in thought, word, and deed, and so I am worthy to be "filled" with his Spirit.
  • I am doing my best to give him my thoughts of gratitude and my sincere repentance during the passing of the sacrament.
  • By feasting on the scriptures and including his words in my life each day, I am filling my spirit with his support and love.
  • When I am not "filled", I make a goal to try harder.
  • I am "filled" each Sunday by partaking of the sacrament worthily and recommitting myself to live my baptismal covenants whole heartily.
